The Orange Parish said it might be interested in buying a glass church of 3,000 seats in southern California that faces bankruptcy. Although a new cathedral was planned with 2,500 seats in Santa Ana for more than 10 years, the diocese only hired a project engineer and is now studying transforming the bankrupt church from Garden Grove into a Catholic cathedral.
The parish announced on July 7 that it is currently looking for a building to meet the needs of 1.2 million Catholics in the 11 largest parishes in Orange County.
"When we continue to develop the plan of Santa Ana Cathedral, it is wise to assess the opportunity to participate in the auction of property and reduce the chances of ceasing to work as a place of worship, if obtained by others," Brown said on Tuesday.
"We have allowed our advisers to contact the parties involved in the proceedings to identify possible actions," Bishop Brown said.
